Hiring Process & Tips

Go to Search Jobs : Get started/Apply now >

Our online application process enables us to efficiently track, manage and respond to your application in a consistent and timely manner. Use the Guided Job Search function to submit your CV online. Available roles across the Asia region can be searched by location and job family. Upon submission of your CV, you will receive an email acknowledging receipt of your application.

After screening all applications, shortlisted candidates will be notified for scheduling of interviews. At Bank of America Merrill Lynch, we strive to identify and select the best candidate for each role. As part of our assessment process, we use competency-based interviews to measure key aptitudes, attributes and values that an individual must demonstrate to be successful in the job. The number of interviews will vary by role and line of business.

If a candidate is determined to be a suitable match after their interview, a competitive employment package will be developed, and a verbal offer will be extended. Once the candidate has accepted this package, a formal offer and contract letter will be drafted, and a signing session will be scheduled. Candidates will also be required to provide documents that will be critical for the on-boarding process, as well as the necessary background checks.

Candidates will then begin the formal on-boarding process once the necessary checks and documents are received and processed.

Interview Preparation

Congratulations! You’ve been invited for an interview.

The purpose of face-to-face interviews is for us to get to know you more and for you to get to know more about us. This is purely a fact-finding mission, it is not a test.

Pre-Interview Preparation

It is important that you make sure you prepare yourself for an interview. You won’t be declined for a position because you prepared too much. A few key points that you should consider when getting ready for the interview are:

  • Know the bank. It is a basic interview question that can easily be conquered. Make sure to research the bank’s values, history and culture. You can find all of this information on our website.
  • Know your CV. There is nothing more embarrassing than being asked a question about your CV and you are not able to answer it.
  • Read the job description. Understanding the position you are applying for is as important as knowing your own CV. Look at the job description and try to anticipate the type of questions you could be asked and prepare examples to demonstrate your expertise or experience in this area.
  • Practise. If you will be taking any kind of testing as part of the interview process (technical, numerical, etc.), be sure to practise. There are a number of free applications online you can use. Also be sure to practise your answers to interview questions – although not too much, you don’t want to sound over rehearsed.
  • Keep up to date with the market. Ensure that you are aware of and understand any industry/position specific “hot” topics. Read through the financial press to help you to keep up to date.
  • Know the location. Be sure to know to know the exact location of the interview. Know the closest train station, print off a map. If needed, do a “dummy” run. Ensure you have contact details for the interviewer, the switchboard or your agency, in case there is a reason you will not be able to arrive on time.
  • Prepare interview questions. Being able to ask thoughtful questions is another way to demonstrate your skills and understanding. Think about what would be important to you if you were, in the role, on the team, in the department and prepare several appropriate questions.

Interview Day

  • Dress appropriately. Be sure to wear appropriate business attire.
  • Allow plenty of travel time. Be sure to allow yourself enough time to get to the location of your interview. If you are running late, make sure to call in advance to advise the interviewer. Remember, that arriving too early can have a detrimental effect; 5 -10 minutes before the interview is plenty of time.
  • Switch your phone off.
  • Body Language. Be conscious of your body language through the interview. A firm handshake, good posture, eye contact and smiling are all signs that interviewers look for.
  • Communication. Make sure to structure your answers in a clear and concise manner. Do not exaggerate or stretch the truth. Most importantly, make sure you answer the question you are asked.
  • Relax. Try to relax as much as possible. You have been selected for an interview because your CV reflected skills and experience that the Hiring Manager was looking for. The interview is not an interrogation or a test; it is a get to know you session. The calmer and more relaxed you are — the more you are likely to present yourself in a positive manner.

    Comp Analyst Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in New York, NY
    No Offer
    Neutral Experience
    Average Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 3+ months. I interviewed at Bank of America (New York, NY) in May 2010.

    Interview

All behavioral. Interviewed on the phone with Charlotte team, met with 3 different individuals in New York. Its hard when half the people work from home and want to interview you outside the office, because you dont get to see their working environment. Comp is a part of HR, but its technical, its all salary data control. I think they hired someone internal. Very hard to read personalities, even if you think youve connected with them, they dont care.

    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Bank of America (Charlotte, NC) in June 2010.

    Interview

Talked to two managers and one peer, got offer next day…not much structure, same questions asked by each person. Purely designed to assess personality traits. Very cursory discussion…if I didnt need the job I would have passed. There is obviously no structure or consistency in their hiring process. Either they like you or they dont.

    Negotiation

    zero negotiation

    Paralegal Interview

    Anonymous Employee in Charlotte, NC
    Accepted Offer
    Negative Experience
    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied through a staffing agency. I interviewed at Bank of America (Charlotte, NC) in January 2014.

    Interview

Interviewed with and through a staffing agency for Bank of America, and hired in a revolving-door team of attorneys for an on-going project. I soon understood why the Bank had difficulty in retaining people to work on the project. The actual documents and the bank system were easily mastered, but the inflexible management would not allow promotion or opportunity to do extra work in order to advance.

    Interview Questions

    • How would you accept a low salary in exchange for the experience of working at Bank of America?   Answer Question

    Negotiation

No negotiation involved as the Bank would not raise the salary, adjust the daily hours to allow more than 8 hours per day or allow weekend work. This was a take-it-ot-leave-it offer.
