Position as postdoctoral research fellow (SKO 1352) is available at the Department of Chemistry / Centre for Theoretical and Computational Chemistry (CTCC), University of Oslo.

The fellowship period is 2 years. Within the framework of the position duties may be assigned. Starting date 1 August, 2015 at earliest, and no later than 1 October, 2015. No one can be appointed for more than one fixed-term period at the same institution.

Job description/ Project description:The available fellowship is part of the research project “Coupled Cluster Methods for Periodic Systems” funded by the Research Council of Norway. The postdoctoral fellow will work in the research group of Associate Professor Thomas Bondo Pedersen and is expected to take a leading role in the development of coupled cluster theory with periodic boundary conditions to enable computational studies of crystals, surfaces, polymers, interfaces, and solutions with unprecedented accuracy. The main obstacle for coupled cluster methods to become useful is the severe computational scaling with respect to system size. This obstacle shall be removed by adapting linear-scaling techniques originally formulated for large molecules to periodic boundary conditions. Two closely related lines of research will pursued, and the postdoctoral fellow is expected to contribute to both: 1 – Development of high-level coupled cluster models for periodic systems. The goal is to develop an efficient implementation for computing total electronic energies and forces with the coupled cluster singles and doubles with perturbative triples (CCSD(T)) model. This work will involve collaboration with the research group of Prof. Poul Jørgensen, Aarhus University, Århus, Denmark, and with SINTEF Materials and Energy, Oslo.2 – Development of range-separated hybrid functionals for periodic Kohn-Sham density functional theory. The aim is to exploit lower-level approximate coupled cluster models, such as the random-phase approximation, to provide an accurate parameter-free account of dispersion interactions in density functional theory. This work will involve collaboration with the research groups of Prof. Poul Jørgensen, Aarhus University, Århus, Denmark, Prof. Julien Toulouse, Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, France, and with SINTEF Materials and Energy, Oslo.

Qualifications
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

The candidate must have a PhD or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in Chemistry, Physics, or other relevant disciplines at the time of appointment. Excellent programming skills and experience with method development in quantum chemistry and/or computational physics are required for this position. Knowledge in high-performance computing and coupled cluster theory and/or density functional theory is desirable. General personal suitability will also be given weight.

The main purpose of postdoctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in top academic positions within their disciplines.

A good command of English is required.Salary:Position code 1352, Pay Grade: 57 – 65 (NOK 482 800 – 559 600 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority).
